Here, mumpreneur Emma Schwartz talks with personal insight about how you too can gain better balance with your daily demands of work and home life.

1 Get Organised

One of the most important aspects of running a business is to get organised. Scheduling tasks and planning your workload in advance helps to keep things in order and makes the work day less stressful. It’s not only running a business that requires a high level of organisation, parenting also requires a huge amount of organisation to make sure everything is in order. Being organised and planning ahead in both work life and family life will certainly help to achieve a happier balance. A busy day doesn’t have to be challenging with the right planning and organisation in place.

2 Stay Motivated But Set Boundaries

Running a business and being career focussed can mean working long hours, it can be tiring, particularly when you are focussing on growing your business. Having goals and personal targets is a great way to stay motivated. Visualising where you want to be is a good mindset to have on your journey to success. Keeping your business goals in mind whilst setting boundaries will help to achieve a more harmonious work / life balance, even on the busiest and hectic of days. Sometimes a clash of work life and home life is unavoidable, especially if you work from home but it’s important to know when to switch off. As well as setting work related goals, you can set goals within your homelife too to help keep the focus on both aspects of your life.

3 Don’t Strive for Perfection

I have spent many hours striving for perfection both in my work life and family life. I’ve learned that not everything needs to be perfect. The perfect family life is often unattainable as priorities are constantly changing, unplanned circumstances arise and sometimes things just don’t go to plan. The same can be said in a work environment. Don’t stress to achieve the impossible by aiming for ultimate perfection.

4 Spend Quality Time

Make some time to spend quality time as a family. If you have a busy workload, schedule time aside to focus on family time. Keeping evenings and weekends free from work will help to keep a harmonious work life balance. This is easier said than done as sometimes priorities change and it’s not always easy to stick to a 9-5 routine, especially when running your own business. Keeping the weekends as free as possible from work will help to achieve a good balance.

5 Make Time for Yourself

Making time for yourself can be really difficult as a working parent. It’s hard to find enough time in the day to balance work and parenting, not to mention all the household chores that need doing. Having some ‘me time’ can help to achieve a happier balance between work and parenting even if you only manage to have a very small amount of time to yourself. Focussing on your own wellbeing can help you stay positive and motivated. It’s important to de-stress and keep things in perspective so that you can concentrate on being successful in your work life as well as focussing on family time.
